Why We Focus on Mentoring
Throughout history the skills of virtually all traditional and indigenous cultures have been handed down from one generation to the next through the hands of a mentor. Through this ongoing interaction of student with elder, far more than the simple knowledge of skills was passed on; it brought a true understanding of how each skill fit into the larger picture of building a better life and a better future for the entire tribe.
Working one-on-one with a mentor who has spent years, even decades, mastering and integrating the skills you are learning into their everyday life — into their very being — is an experience that can not be recreated in a large-group or lecture setting.
"The mentoring session was the bomb! Thanks a ton.
To anyone who has been thinking about a mentoring session, stop thinking and just do it. There are other schools where you can spend 3 times the money for a quarter of the training time but they will never be able to match the personal attention and just plain feral fun of Eddie and Julie"
— Mark Wright HMC(SS), USN
A mentor leads a student on a voyage of discovery, so not only does the student understand the principles involved, but the deeper teachings and possibilities as well.
I spent years teaching thousands of students in groups of up to 200 people at a time, and saw over and over again that large group and classroom-style situations provided, at best, a minimal understanding of the basic principles. The variables in skill level, learning styles and interest in the topic were simply too great for the lessons to be effectively learned.
It was during workshop time, when I would get to work with small groups of students, or spend one-on-one time mentoring in a more traditional way, that true understanding would begin to dawn in their eyes, and true change take place in their lives.
It became obvious that the traditional ways still held as the only truly effective manner in which to teach these skills. Personal attention is the key factor in bringing these skills out of your notebook and into your life.
How Do I Choose What Skills to Schedule for Mentoring Sessions?
A great way to start is by checking out our Workshop Schedule. Choose your course, then maximize your trip by adding a pre-class Mentoring Session to bring your skills up to speed. Or, schedule some sessions after class is over and take your new skills, or any other skills you'd like to spend time on, to the next level.
But maybe you can't make the workshop you'd love to take, or the skill you really want to learn or practice is not yet on the schedule. No more waiting around on someone else's choices — pick the skill YOU want to know and schedule however many Mentoring Sessions you want, in whatever time-frame fits your schedule.
You can't get more Practical than that!
