Personal Mentoring & Private Workshops
What's the Difference?
Over the past ten years we have seen that our students learn new skills much better, and enjoy the experience far more, in our small group workshop setting over what they get out of Mentoring. If you are new to primitive skills, we strongly encourage you check out our Weekend Workshop Schedule to find the skills you are most interested and excited to learn, and join us for whichever ones fit your schedule. There is no particular order in which the skills "should" be learned, and while there are definitely some core skills around which all others revolve (awareness, plants, fire, stone tools) they all intertwine. As Eddie likes to say, "The further down the rabbit hole you go, the deeper and wider it gets". The most important thing is to start learning!
However, we recognize that not everyone can make weekend workshops, and for those of you with unusual schedules, a during-the-week session may be your best option. Alternatively, you may be looking to break through a "wall" in your skills, or for additional assistance with a more advanced level of skill, or some one-on-one attention to assist you with a specific problem you can not figure out. It is for you that we offer our Personal Mentoring and Private Workshop sessions.
Unless we are traveling to our Texas or Ontario locations, all Mentoring takes place at our main location in Great Meadows, NJ. However, if we are traveling across the U.S. or Canada and time and schedule permits, you may be able to schedule a Mentoring session or Private Workshop at your location while we are traveling, or at our locations in Central Texas and Southern Ontario.
If you are looking to break through a "wall" in your skills, or for additional assistance with a more advanced level of skill, or some personalized attention to assist you with a specific problem you can not figure out, then Mentoring Sessions are definitely for you.
Mentoring time is not like a regular workshop. It is personalized time with Eddie and/or Julie that is dedicated to answering your questions or overcoming problems or difficulites you are having with a skill. We do not create a lesson plan; the day is driven by you and by the questions you bring with you to have answered. Mentoring time is generally scheduled for one or two people. If there are more than three of you, please see the information on Private Workshops below. Mentoring time is scheduled on available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays may possibly be scheduled if you are coming to a regular weekend workshop and want to combine time and make the most of your trip.
Mentoring time is scheduled by the hour, for a flat fee of $100 per hour for the first four hours and $50 per additional hour. All materials are provided by you for Mentoring time. If you would like us to provide the necessary materials for your session, that can be arranged in advance for an additional fee. If you would like to schedule some Mentoring time, give us a call or send Julie an e-mail. Before contacting us, please know, or at least have some idea about, the following:
- The specific skill(s) you want to work on.
- The specific questions you would like to have answered.
- The amount of time you would like to spend.
- If you will be bringing your materials with you or if you would like us to supply them.
- A few date options that might work. (Remember, Mentoring time is usually scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Please check our Schedule to ensure the dates you would like are potentially available.)
"The mentoring session was the bomb! Thanks a ton.
To anyone who has been thinking about a mentoring session, stop thinking and just do it. There are other schools where you can spend 3 times the money for a quarter of the training time but they will never be able to match the personal attention and just plain feral fun of Eddie and Julie."
— Mark Wright HMC(SS), USN
If you are unable to attend one of our regular Weekend Workshops due to a difficult work or family schedule, or if there are four or more of you interested in scheduling your own personalized workshop, then Private Workshops may be for you. Private Workshops can be scheduled as half-day (9am - 1pm / 1 pm - 5pm) or full-day (9am - 5pm) sessions and can be on any skill or topic you choose. Just like Mentoring sessions, Private Workshops are scheduled on available Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays may possibly be scheduled if you are coming to a regular weekend workshop and want to combine and make the most of your trip.
Private Workshops are set up similar to regular workshops in that we have a lesson plan prepared for the day, and we provide all the tools and materials you will need. For half-day workshops we will need to agree on the lesson plan in advance to ensure that the desired skills and subject can be appropriately coverd in that amount of time. Please see the chart below for pricing details for private workshops, which is based on the number of people who will be attending. (Price listed is the per person cost for the half or full day.) For information on scheduling multi-day Private Workshops, please contact Julie.
Private One-day Workshop Pricing (per person)
|5 -10 People||$100||$150|

If you would like to schedule a Private Workshop, give us a call or send Julie an e-mail. Before contacting us, please know, or at least have some idea about, the following:
