Now seeking Intern to Begin in May!

If you want to learn, we want to teach you!
We know, however, that for many folks these days your bank account doesn't always match your desire to learn these skills. If that's the case for you then why not join our Practical Primitive Team as an Intern or a Work-Trade participant? Each of these programs will allow you to assist us here at Practical Primitive in exchange for workshops. We are looking for all sorts of people to work with us on all sorts of projects, both on the property and in the office.

What's the Difference Between the Internship and Work-Trade Programs?

We are in need of many extra hands to complete many different projects, both on the property and in the office. If you have experience or interest in any of the skills below, we would love to have you as a part of our Practical Primitive Team!

 

About the Internship Program

As a Practical Primitive Intern You Will:

» Live on-site at Practical Primitive
» Work a minimum of 30 hours per week on projects that match your skill sets
»Take any 1, 2 or 3 day Practical Primitive workshop you wish during your program¹

Workshops taught by Guest Instructors and 4-day Self Bow workshops are not included.)

Q. Is there a minimum or maximum age restriction?
A. You must be at least 18 years of age in order to apply, however this is not strictly a "student" position. We are an equal opportunity company and are willing to work with anyone who is eager, trustworthy and motivated. We have no upper age limit and encourage anyone who may be interested to apply, so long as you feel physically capable of helping out in lots of different ways.

Q. When will my Internship start and how long will it last?
A. We are currently seeking 2016 Interns to begin any time after May 15th. (All 2016 Internships will be completed no later than December 15.)
We prefer 3 - 6 month Internships, but will consider accommodating shorter terms upon request. 1 month is the minimum length that will be considered.

Q. Do I need to have taken workshops with you to apply?
A. While it is not mandatory to have attended workshops, preference may be given to applicants we have had the opportunity to meet and get to know, whether through workshops, Open Skills Nights, or other means. If we have never met, but you submit an excellent and compelling application that piques our interest, we will want to interview you in-person or via Skype before we will consider your for the Internship program.

Q. What skills you are looking for and what types of projects will Interns be working on?
A. During your Internship you will be helping out with many day-to-day aspects of the business. You will be lending a hand in all areas, including (but not limited to):

Q. What qualities you are looking for in an Intern?
A. We are seeking an Intern who is reliable, trustworthy, honest, friendly, helpful, curious, eager, self-motivated, can see what needs doing and does it, does not require someone constantly looking over their shoulder, finishes what they start, cleans up after themselves, enjoys being around people, likes to try new things, is not afraid to work, and most of all, has an honest desire to learn and practice these skills because they are fun and fascinating part of our history and heritage that enriches us all and can help connect us to the Earth make the world a better place.

About the Work-Trade Program

Work Trade

As a Participant in the Work-Trade Program You Will:

» Live off-site in your own housing
» Work a designated number of hours on specific projects that match your skill sets
» Receive a 1-for-1 exchange in workshop hours; for every 8 hours you work you will bank 1 day of workshop¹

Workshops taught by Guest Instructors and 4-day Self Bow workshops are not included.)

Q. Is there a minimum or maximum age restriction?
A. You must be at least 18 years of age in order to apply. We are an equal opportunity company and are willing to work with anyone who is eager, trustworthy and motivated. We have no upper age limit and encourage anyone who may be interested to apply.

Q. When will my Work-Trade start and how long will it last?
A. We are always seeking 2016 Work-Trade participants to begin any time. Each Work-Trade program is individual to the participant in duration and we will work with you to determine a project schedule that will work for all of us.

Q. Do I have to use all of my workshop credit hours during my term?
A. No, your workshop credit hours will extend beyond your program for pre-determined length of time agreed to before you begin.

Skills We're Looking for and Projects We're Working On...

We have several Outdoor Projects we will be getting started on once the Winter snows disappear, including:

Since these are physically oriented projects, successful applicants should be comfortable using power tools including, but not limited to, lawnmowers, weed eaters, brush busters, drills and saws. (Don't worry if you haven't used them all, just don't be afraid of using them!) Chainsaw experience is an extra bonus! Successful applicants must also have a level of fitness that will allow them to dig, haul and chop, as required. We don't care if you are a man or woman, if you are 18 or 80 — if you are ready to work and ready to learn we want to see your application!

CODE OF CONDUCT
All Interns will be required to conduct themselves according to the following Code of Conduct. Successful applicants will be required to sign a copy of the Code prior to beginning their Internship, and will be held to account throughout the full course of their term.

  • Practical Primitive is an all-inclusive school and we work hard to make sure that each and every person who attends our workshops, Open Skills Nights and other events feels welcome, at home and among friends, regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any visible or non-visible difference. Interns will be expected to maintain a friendly demenor at all times during workshops and events, and be social with all students, ensuring that no one feels unwelcome or ill-at-ease.
  • When assisting with workshops or representing Practical Primitive during Open Skills Nights or other Events, Interns are expected to comport themselves as a fellow student. You will not be expected to assist beyond your own level of skills experience.
  • All Interns will be expected to maintain a well-groomed and appropriately professional appearance. Clean clothes and proper hygiene will be required during workshops, Opens Skills Nights and any other events at which you are representing Practical Primitive.
  • Romantic relationships with students are not a part of this Internship. If you meet someone with whom you feel a "special connection" you will be expected to behave in a strictly professional manner until the end of your term.
  • Drug use will not be tolerated. Any Intern found to be engaging in the use of illegal or recreational drugs on any level will be immediately expelled from the program and any credit hours will become void.
  • Sexual harassment, degrading or demeaning speech or inappropriate behavior of any sort toward students, guests, friends or staff will not be tolerated on any level and will result in immediate expulsion from the program and any credit hours will become void.
  • Theft, or any other illegal activity, will not be tolerated on any level and will result in immediate dismissal from the program and any credit hours will become void.
  • Equality is one of the hallmarks of our Mission at Practical Primitive, and all Interns will be expected to uphold that ideal on every level.
  • We do these things because they are fun!
