Q. How many people do you accept into the program?
A. Each TRUE SURVIVAL Hunter-Gatherer Tribe is limited to 4-6 people and built around the applicants we feel will make the most productive Tribe.

Q. Is there an age limit?
A. You must be at least 18 years old to apply for the TRUE SURVIVAL Hunter-Gatherer program. There is no upper age limit and so long as you are physically able to complete the course-work and participate in the outing we encourage you to apply. We have had past Tribe-members from age 19 to 67.

Q. Where do the Hunter-Gatherer weekends take place?
A. The TRUE SURVIVAL: The World of the Hunter-Gatherer weekends take place at our main Practical Primitive location near Great Meadows, NJ. Check out our Locations page for more detailed information and directions.

"By far the Hunter-Gatherer program was much more than I anticipated. Eddie must have put in
a lot of forethought and planning for us to have been exposed to so much quality material.
I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to be a part of the program... (it) not only gave me
skills I always longed for but ones I would never have known about."
      — Scott F. (2009 Tribe, TX)

Q. I really want to apply but have a conflict for one of the weekends listed on the schedule. What can I do?
A.The first weekend of each month is the standard time set aside for Hunter-Gatherer, however variations can be made and the final dates will be based on the schedules of accepted Tribe members and agreed upon by all.

Q. What if I will definitely not be able to make one of the weekends no matter when it is rescheduled? Should I still apply?
A. As a Hunter-Gatherer Tribe member you must commit to attend every get-together weekend without fail. If you know that you will be away for an extended period, or are unable to commit to attending every one of the Hunter-Gatherer weekends it would be best that you wait to apply until your schedule is more accomodating.

Q. I live far away & can't "commute". Do you have a Residential option?
A. Yes, a limited number of Residential spaces are available for an additional fee. If you would like more information please e-mail us for details. We also live near a college town with many places for rent & would be happy to provide you with local information.

"Anyone serious about survival skills who feel paralyzed with the frustration caused by failure shoud consider taking this course... Hunter-Gatherer is hands-on learning."
      — Eric S. (2010 Tribe, NJ)

Q. What sort of skills / experience do I need to have to apply?
A. There are no minimum or maximum skill-level requirements for the Hunter-Gatherer program. Whether you are a skilled outdoorsperson, someone who has taken a few classes over the years, or one who has to this point been only an armchair enthusiast, will make no difference when we are reviewing applications. We are looking for people who want to LEARN, have a passion for learning the ways of our ancestors and a real desire to discover how those skills can be integrated into our modern world and passed on to others. If you are dedicated, self-motivated, prepared to learn and always ready to try, perhaps fail, and try again, we hope you will apply today!

Q. How do you choose your Tribe members?
A. Participants will be chosen based on the answers in their application, and our belief that they will be productive and accepting members of the Tribe. We choose carefully to bring together a group we believe will work well together and bring out the best in each other.

Q. Do I have to have taken a Practical Primitive workshop in order to apply?
A. No, it is not mandatory to have attended a Practical Primitive workshop in order to apply for the TRUE SURVIVAL: World of the Hunter-Gatherer. We have had several Tribe-members for whom Hunter-Gatherer was their first Practical Primitive experience. However, due to the importance of the Power of the Tribe, preference may be given to applicants we have had the opportunity to meet and get to know, whether through workshops, attendance at our free Open Skills Nights, at events, or through other means.
If we have never met but you submit an excellent and compelling application that piques our interest we will want to chat with you on the phone and, if the distance is feasible, ask that you come to meet us in-person and possibly attend a "group" event (such as an Open Skills Night) to help us get a better sense of how your personality will "fit" with the other members of the Tribe. Remember, you will be spending a lot of time in the woods with your Tribe-mates — we want you to like each other!

"It was an experience hard to put into words —
eye-opening and amazing;
it changed my life."

Q. What do you mean by "Homework" and does it matter if I won't have time to do it all?
A. This is a hands-on, project-based program in which you will make all of your own tools and equipment. Each weekend we will cover the basics of certain skills and begin a project which you will then be required to complete on your own. If you are accepted we expect that you will make this program a priority in your life for those six months and require that you work diligently to complete all homework assignments each month. This is a hands-on, project-based program and each month builds on the skills and projects of the last. If you fall behind it will affect not just you, but your entire Tribe. Remember, as part of the Tribe you are not only working to better your own skills, but to be a productive and contributing member of your community! If you are unable to devote time and energy to working and practicing your skills on a regular basis it would be best if you waited to apply until your schedule is more accomodating.

"This program builds a strong foundation in a much wider range of essential and useful skills than you could ever imagine! Furthermore, the overall attitudes Eddie & Julie engender in their students through this course wil be a blessing to your life in ways that you will not at first see."
      — Jon T. (2009 Tribe, TX)

Q. Are there any "Materials" fees on top of the tuition?
A. No, we provide the materials for your Hunter-Gatherer projects at no extra charge. We do give you a list of reference books you will need to purchase for your "skills library", as well as a few inexpensive tools you will require to complete your homework projects, howeverthese additional costs are minimal. Feel free to contact us for more specific details.

Q. Do you offer any scholarships or tuition assistance?
A. We do not currently provide tuition assistance or work-study options for our Intensive Skills Programs, however we have Payment Plan options as well as a Pay Later option that we hope will make it possible for most anyone to participate.
