Events, Appearances & Important Dates

Whenever we schedule a Special Event or Road Trip we'll list it here so can join us at events, or take advantage of us being in your area to set up a Workshop or Mentoring Session.

NOTE: We are keeping our travel schedule light for 2012 as there is so much work to do here at home in building up our new facility! However, we do hope to hit many Events this year, including Traditional Archery Rendezvous', Knap-in's and Primitive Skills Gatherings to let as many people as possible know about our new place, so if you know of a cool event within driving distance from New Jersey send us the info, and if we can work it into the scheule we'll try to make it out!

We'll be doing Fire-Making demos and other fun stuff throughout the weekend, and have soaps and salves and bowdrill kits and more for sale, so stop by our booth and say hi — we look forward to seeing you there!

The courses are well laid out, the site is really nice, the camping is free and the people are great. Edible Plants Walk on Open Skills Night

Learning wild plants

Practical Primitive, Great Meadows, NJ
June 15
6:00 pm

We are very excited to announce that Dan Farella of Return to Nature will be conduction his Edible Plants Walk here at Practical Primitive at the beginning of every Open Skills Night throughout the summer! Dan has spent the past 15 years learning about wild plants and has followed that passion into his own business, through which he has been conduction walks and teaching about plants throughout the tri-state area for the past several years. Dan incorporates wild plants and mushrooms into his regular diet and has experimented extensively with using wild edibles in everyday cooking. We know this for a fact because, as a Practical Primitive Intern, Dan is constantly cooking up tasty wild treats right here in our kitchen!

We hope that you will come and join Dan on his monthly walks here at Practical Primitive — each month will bring new and exciting plants to discover! The walk will begin at 6:00 p.m. and last for approximately 90 minutes (give or take). Dan does not charge for his teaching but instead accepts donations "from $0 - $30" both in person after the walk or on his website. If you would like to join in on this fun and exciting evening activity please give us a call at 908-637-8137 to let us know you will be attending so he doesn't start without you!

ETAR: The Eastern Traditional Archery Rendezvous

Ski Denton
Coudersport, PA
July 28-31

WE MESSED UP THE DATES! All year I've had ETAR on our calendar for the weekend of July 21-24 but apparently I got it WRONG! Sadly, our very full Archery Fundamentals workshop July 30-31 means that we will, once again, be missing this fun and amazing event. :-(
We'll miss seeing you all there, but have a great time for us and think sunny thoughts!

We missed this event last year due to personal issues, and are missing this year due to a scheduling mix-up, but are looking forward to being back next year! We've had a real blast at this event in the past and really enjoy having it as part of our regular Summer Events "tour". One of the largest Traditional-Only Archery events in the world, 'Denton' draws shooters and their families from across the eastern half of the United States, down from Canada, even from Europe. Eight courses with over 200 3-D targets spread across 700 acres, over 100 traditional archery bowyers and suppliers, an Eagle Eye Competition and seminars on many different topics — this event is "The Show"!
Look forward to seeing you there, and let's hope for less rain this time around!
For directions & more information about the event, see the Archery Festivals website.

World of the Hunter-Gatherer Survival Outing

August 19-24

The culmination of the whole program, our New Jersey Hunter-Gatherers will be heading out on their Survival Outing this week. They meet up at a location they have never been before, choose their camp site, build their shetler and spend the week living off the land in true Hunter-Gatherer style. Able to bring with them only items that they made themselves during the course of the program, this is their chance to test themselves, and discover what they really know and what they only thought they knew!
The previous outings have been great successes and fantastic experiences for their Tribes, and we know this one will be too. Photos will be posted after they return!

Stone Tool Technology Show

Letchworth State Park
Castile, NY
August 26-28

We have been trying to get to this event for several years now, but something always prevents us from going. But we have it on our schedule again for this year really hope to make it this time! So long as nothing goes awry, this will be our first year at "Letchworth", the largest Stone Tool show in the Northeast, and we can't wait. This one is on the calendar of just about every serious flintknapper in the eastern U.S., and only bring as much money as you can afford to spend because when you see all the pretty, pretty rock self-control quickly goes straight out the window!
Set in the area of the Genesee River, take an hour to check out the fabulous falls and the 600 foot gorge that the New York State Park website calls "the Grand Canyon of the east".
For more information & directions, check out the New York State Parks & Recreation website.

September

Flint Ridge Knap-in

Flint Ridge Memorial Park
Brownsville, OH
September 2–4

The culmination of the big knap-in season in the east, plenty of knappers go straight from the Letchworth event in New York State the previous weekend, right on down to Flint Ridge. While we will not be attending this event ourselves this year, we have always had a fantastic time at this event will miss seeing old friends and making new ones this time around, and if you live in the area, we strongly encourage you to go and check it out!
This is a fun show with plenty of rock and knapping tools, an atlatl range, as well as suppliers for all kinds of other primitive and traditional skills. (Including one of the finest and most reasonably priced teepee makers we've ever met, Wendell Humphrey. If you're in the market for a teepee, this is the guy to call!) And if you're looking for rock, stop by Craig Ratzat's tent, cause he will hook you up! (And be sure to tell him Eddie & Julie sent you :-)
